WHO AM I? Sheila Griffin

I am Sheila, a Primary Mathematics Consultant based in Mandurah, Western Australia.

My journey in the field of primary mathematics education is marked by a diverse and impactful career. My dedication to enhancing the teaching and learning of mathematics is evident through my extensive experience as a classroom teacher, Numeracy Coach, Deputy Principal, Project Officer for Money Smart (the teaching of financial literacy), tutor at Murdoch University and Numeracy Consultant at the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia (AISWA).

Highlights have been my recognition with the prestigious CHOOSEMATHS awards for Excellence in Teaching and Outstanding Primary Teacher of the Year by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI). Additionally, I received a Commonwealth Bank award for the whole school approach to the teaching of financial literacy whilst at Singleton Primary School.

My contributions extend beyond the classroom, as I share my insights on podcasts for AMSI and the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT).

I regularly attend and present at mathematics conferences for the Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA) and the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV), as well as recordings for virtual conferences which have further enriched the mathematics teaching community.

My collaborative work on publications like “Teaching Mathematics Through Story Books” with Dr Paul Swan, Linda Marshall and Kristin Humphreys and “Mathematics and Picture Books in Early Childhood” as well as “Learning Mathematics Through Picture Books in Kindergarten” showcases my innovative approach to making mathematics accessible to teachers and engaging for young learners. My achievements reflect my passion and commitment, inspiring educators and students alike.

I am a board director of the Mathematical Association of Western Australia and I am a panel member for Ecstra Foundation Financial Education which is part of the Federal Government’s National Financial Capability Stragegy.
